Professor Fausto Pitigliani, president of the Jewish Community of Rome, is leaving for a two-month visit to the United States during which he will lecture on the recent discovery at Ostia, the harbor of ancient Rome, of the remains of a monumental synagogue building believed to date back to between the fifth and second centuries before the Common Era. The discovery of the remains of the synagogue, believed to be the most ancient Jewish monument in the world outside of Palestine, was announced last September by Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff.

Professor Pitigliani, who will lecture at the Jewish Museum, the Theodore Herzl Institute, the New School for Social Research and other colleges and universities, will also discuss the problems of the European Jewish communities and will meet with American Jewish leaders.
