Prof. Moritz Winternitz, authority on Sanskrit and author of many works on Indian literature, religion and art, died here yesterday at the age of 74.
Born in Austria, Prof. Winternitz’s first important post was as instructor of German at Oxford University, England. In 1895, he became librarian of the Indian Institute at Oxford. Four years later he joined the faculty of the German University here, and in 1911 was made head of the Sanskrit department.
His most widely known work is the “History of Indian Literature,” in three volumes, published in 1922 and 1923. He also published a catalogue of Sanskrit and at one time delivered series of lectures at the Indian University in Santinikitan, India.
