Prof. Leo A. Mayer, world noted orientalist, who was voted last week by the Hebrew University as this year’s recipient of the coveted Bublick prize, died today. He was 64.
A distinguished authority on Near Eastern art and archaeology, Dr. Mayer was professor emeritus at the Hebrew University. The prize was voted specifically for his major life’s work, a four-volume study of Moslem Artists Throughout the Ages. Three volumes of that work have been published, and the fourth volume was in preparation.
Other noted men who had been awarded the Bublick Prize previously included Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, the late Prof. E. L. Sukenik, former U.S. President Harry S. Truman, Prof. Giulio Racah, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Prof. Bernhard Zondek and former United States Senator Herbert H. Lehman.
