The Israeli Government project for construction of 20,000 housing units to shelter new immigrants was launched today when officials formally turned over the required dwelling plots to the building companies participating in the scheme.
The project is aimed at reducing the current, heavy pressure on the Israeli settlements, which are compelled to accept most of the newly-arrived immigrants. Thousands of recent arrivals will be employed in constructing the new units, which will be erected along the coastal plain. The second stage of the program will take care of constructing remaining units elsewhere in the country.
