William Levy, 54, a prominent Jew active in advocating peace between the Moslems and Europeans in Algeria, was shot and killed here last night, and police believe his assassins were connected with the OAS, the French underground military organization.
Mr. Levy was secretary-general for the Algiers regional organization of the French Socialist Party, and a member of the party’s central committee. He had received several threats from the OAS; Moslem terrorists killed one of his sons four years ago.
Algerian Jews have reacted with deep emotion to this latest attack on one of their number; Several other prominent Jews have been killed in the last few weeks by the OAS activists; Political tracts circulated by the OAS have, however, maintained that the murders were due to the political beliefs of the victims and “not to their religion.”
