The American Consul General here was among the many non-Jewish guests who attended the Yom Kippur services at the Great Synagogue on Tlomackie, where Cantor Gerson Sirota officiated.
The Great Synagogue and all other houses of worship throughout the capital and provincial towns were overcrowded.
The most solemn day of the Jewish year did not pass without incidents here. On Kol Nidre night the police surrounded a meeting of workingmen at the Workingmens’ Home, under the auspices of the Left Poale Zion. The police dispersed the meeting and arrested eight participants.
On Saturday at noon, a group of Jewish freethimkers arranged a workingmen’s meeting at the Circus. The police surrounded the building and dispersed the meeting. Following this, the participants formed small demonstrative groups in the Jewish quarter, eating and smoking publicly, to the annoyance of the Orthodox element.
