The World Jewish Congress reported today that prominent Uruguayan intellectuals and political personalities, including Cabinet Ministers, Senators, Deputies, military chiefs and university professors declared their support for the right of Soviet Jews to immigrate to Israel in written messages to a large mass rally organized by Uruguay’s Jewish Central Committee in Montevideo. Also communicated to the rally was a message from the Commission on Foreign Affairs of the Uruguayan Senate announcing that it had unanimously adopted a resolution subject to approval by the Senate, to send a cable urging the authorities in the Soviet Union to permit Jews who so desired to emigrate to Israel. The rally last week was organized under the slogan “Let our brothers in the Soviet Union go” Dr. Isaac Goldenberg, President of the Latin American Jewish Congress, who reported on the situation of Jews in the Soviet Union, emphasized that it was the duty of Jews in all countries of the free world to declare their support for the right of Soviet Jews to leave that country if they so desired.
