Justice Minister Shmuel Tamir submitted to the Knesset today a bill abolishing unlimited administrative detentions by the army. According to the new bill, administrative detentions by the Ministry of Defense will be carried out subject to their approval by a district court. Each detention will have to be approved within two months by the president of the district court. The president will have to review each such file once every three months.
Introducing the bill to the Knesset at its last meeting before the summer recess, Tamir said the existing regulations were used during the British Mandate period to hold Jews prisoners for unlimited periods of time, and it was high time to change them. The bill won praise from strong critics of the government, such as MKs Shulamit Aloni of the Civil Rights Movement and Meir Payil of Sheli, who termed it liberal and progressive.
