Jews of Berescht who refuse to trade on the Sabbath are being prosecuted by the local authorities, it was revealed today.
A Jewish merchant, Lupu Fain, has been indicted on charges of speculation. The charge arose when Fain, who always keeps his store closed on the Sabbath and Jewish holidays, refused to sell a pair of shoes on the Sabbath.
The Jewish merchant now faces a prison term of three to nine months and the payment of a fine of 30,000 lei.
The general press in reporting the case criticizes the Minister of Justice for declaring that he is interested in the outcome of this case, which the papers call a most peculiar perversion of the regulations.
