Representatives of the citrus growers of Israel who have just returned from a business trip to various European countries report that conditions are unfavorable for the marketing of Israel’s citrus crop in Europe this year.
The representatives, Itzhak Rokach and Zvi Isacson, said that the system of central purchasing by the British Food Ministry plus bumper crops in Italy, Spain and North Africa have combined to ruin the market for Israel fruit. They also stated that the Farmers Association has decided to approach the government to pay out subsidies to aid the citrus growers.
Meanwhile, the first citrus shipment to Britain of this year’s crop left last night in an Israel freighter. Additional cargoes will follow next month. Israel shippers hope that a total of 2,500,000 cases of fruit will be transported to Britain in Israel holds this year, as compared with 200,000 cases last year.
