Police officials subjected the prominent opera singer, Leon Kortyli, to a severe grilling following his inclusion of a Jewish song into his performance. Kortyli had been warned by the “Starosta” of Kovel that Jewish songs were taboo, but the singer nevertheless sang it and was given much applause.
The Jewish press is asking the Minister of Interior how the police proceedings which followed the singing of an innocent folk song can be reconciled with his promise to “encourage tolerance among all classes”.
