The National Council of Churches of Christ in America assailed the House Un-American Activities Committee for publishing testimony by ex-Communist leader Benjamin Gitlow charging the late Rabbis Stephen S. Wise and Judah L. Magnes with being Communist collaborators.
The Protestant body, in a resolution adopted by its general board, said it was “shocked” by the Committee’s “abuse of Congressional investigative process” and pointed out that the publication of the testimony was in utter disregard of the American tradition of fair play since both rabbis were dead and could not defend their names. The resolution was drafted by the Right Rev. Knox Sherrill, Presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church.
