Protests by Jews against permitting the Congregation Thaarat Haimeschpocho to alter a residence for a ritual bath (mikveh) in accordance with orthodox ritual, has caused the St. Louis Board of Adjustment, which hears appeals from the action of the building commissioner in the issuance of building permits, to postpone granting the permit.
Permission had been granted for alterations by the building commissioner but this was revoked after a remonstrance from the owners of an adjacent residence on the ground that the bath was undesirable. Thirty residents presented a protest, including Morris Lazarus who expressed the opinion that it was a commercial enterprise.
A successful campaign was recently conducted here to establish a sanitary ritual bath.
