Means to safeguard the schechita were taken when the bill for the humane slaughter of animals in Scotland passed its final stage before the Scottish Standing Committee of the House of Commons yesterday. The bill was ordered to be reported, as amended, for Third Reading. Clause 1, as amended, requires the use of “mechanically operated instruments” in all slaughterhouses and knackers’ yards, and lays down other conditions for avoiding unnecessary suffering to the animals slaughtered.

Colonel Moore moved a new clause exempting from the provisions of the bill any animal slaughtered for the food of Jews by a Jew duly licensed for the purpose by the Chief Rabbi. Exception was taken to this proposal, but it was carried by 18 votes to 3.
