Jewish communal needs in Prussia were included in. the state budget by a vote in the Prussian Diet yesterday.
The Diet voted the amount of 400,000 marks for the instruction of Jewish religion in elementary schools and the amount of 200,000 marks for rabbis’ salaries and pensions in the Jewish communities which function weekly.
Issachar Greenberg was elected Chairman of the Business Men’s Council of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Montreal at the annual meeting held at the Montefiore Club. Clarence Michaels and J. P. Levee were elected First and Second Vice-Chairmen.
In the annual report, the Chairman stated that the Council was succemful in raising $254,112.52 for 1927.
“Certain Diseases Pecullar to the Jewish Race” was the title of a lecture given Wednesday afternoon, March 21, by Sir Humphrey Rolleston, of England, in the auditorium of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, Baltimore. Ameng cther things, Sir Humphrey has long held the position of consulting physician to the London Jewish Hospital.
Sir Humphrey, who has been physician to King George V of England since 1923, is regius professor of physies at the University of Cambridge. He is a former president of the Royal College of Physicians and is an honorary member of the Association of American Physicians and an honorary fellow of the American Medical Association. During the World War, as consulting physician to the British navy, Sir Humphrey held the rank of rear admiral.
A dinner in honor of Sir Humphrey was given Wednesday night at the Maryland Club.
A memorial performance was held Wednesday at the Public Theatre, to raise funds for a monument to be placed over one grave of Jacob P. Adler, at which more than 2,000 persons were present.
The performance was given as part of a movement undertaken by the Hebrew Actors’ Union, headed by Joseph Barondess, Samuel Paley and Charles W. Groll. The performance netted about $6,500.
Temple Beth el, the new synagogue of the Hebrew Community Centre of Lowell, Mass., has been dedicated. The synagogue is a part of the Community Centre headquarters in the former Highland Club building. The dedication ceremony was conducted by Rabbi Bernard H. Ziskind. Rabbi Abrabam M. Heller of the Brooklyn, N. Y., Jewish Centre, spoke at the dedication.
