Public and private celebrations of the seventh anniversary of Israel’s independence were held by Jewish groups throughout the country today. The cornflower, chosen by the American Zionist Council as a symbol of Israel’s blue-white flag, was distributed in the streets of New York and other major cities.
The Israel Consulate in New York gave a reception for Israel citizens now in this country. Israel’s anniversary was also marked at a series of United Jewish Appeal campaign meetings in New York which were attended by more than 4,000 leaders in industry and communal affairs. Israel’s achievements were reviewed at these meetings by prominent speakers.
The American Zionist Council held a reception this afternoon to mark Independence Day at the Carnegie Endowment International Center. Speakers included Rabbi Mordecai Kirshblum, vice-chairman of the Council, Mrs. Rose Halprin, vice-chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, and Avraham Harman, Israel consul general in New York.
