It is impossible to state accurately whether any of the religious structures in Jerusalem destroyed or damaged during the Palestine fighting were harmed by Jews or Arabs, Canon Rhoda in, secretary-general of Catholic Relief and a member of the Catholic mission which studied the refuges situation in Palestine, declared on his arrival here today.
The Catholic dignitary who was formerly the Chief Chaplain of the French Army, said that many of the synagogues in the Old City of Jerusalem had been destroyed in non-military operations. He and members of his mission visited the Arab countries and the Arab part of the city, but did not cross into Israel. He did not indicate the present position of the Vatican on the proposed Jerusalem statute covering the Holy Places, although he indicated that the Vatican’s policy conformed in general with the position adopted by France on the question before the United Nations General Assembly.
