Girl pupils in Hebrew schools of Brooklyn will be awarded annual prizes for excellence in the study of Jewish history as result of a gift made by David Shapiro, publisher of The Day, it was announced yesterday by Bernard Semel, honorary secretary of the Jewish Education Society.
The awards, to be known as the Bella Shapiro Memorial Prizes in honor of Mr. Shapiro’s wife, who died in 1933, will be given through the Brooklyn division of the society under the chairmanship of Municipal Court Justice Nathan Sweedler.
The annual donation amounts to $250, which will be divided into prizes to be distributed among the writers of the best essays on a Jewish historical subject. Mrs. Shapiro was particularly interested in the religious education of Jewish girls and active in philanthropic endeavors.
