Purim, Festival of Lots, Celebrated Tomorrow

Purim, the Festival of Lots, will be observed tomorrow in synagogues and Jewish homes.

Three special Purim entertainments, under the auspices of the Jewish Education Association were arranged with a view to stimulating registration in the Jewish religious schools. One of these took place yesterday morning at the Congregation Mt. Sinai Anshe Emeth, New York City. Next Sunday, there will be two entertainments, one at the Institutional Synagogue, and the other at the Talmud Torah Aitz Chaim, Brooklyn. The festival will be celebrated by Young Judaea clubs throughout the United States.

The National Office of Young Judaea issued, for the guidance of its numerous clubs, a booklet for Purim, containing suggestions for plays and entertainments.

The Jewish Welfare Board also issued literature for the celebration of Purim.

A conference of Jewish leaders was held at the Brooklyn Jewish Center for the purpose of taking steps to strengthen Jewish education in the Borough. A committee to cooperate with the Jewish Education Association was formed with Jacob H. Cohen as chairman. Samuel Rottenberg, President of the Brooklyn Jewish Center and Vice-President of the Jewish Education Association, and Bernard Semel, honorary Secretary of the Association, were the speakers.

A decision was reached to hold a dinner in Brooklyn on April 22nd for the benefit of the Scholarship Fund of the Jewish Education Association.

The dedication of the new $350,000 temple of the North Shore Congregation Israel of Glencoe. He was held on Friday evening, March 2. An address of greeting was delivered by the Rev. James Austin Richards of the Winnetka Congregational church.

The congregation, which has a membership of almost 350, takes in the suburban territory north of Chicago from Evanston to Highland Park.

The officers of the congregation are: Harry N. Gottlieb of Winnetka president: Joseph Michaels of Highland Park, vice president: Herman Katz of Wilmette, treasurer: and Mrs. Isidor Portis of Winnetka, secretary. Al Weisberg of Glencoe is chairman of the building committee, and Sam Goodman of Highland Park, chairman of the finance committee. Alfred Alschuler of Winnetka, a member of the congregation was the architect.

The congregation was organized ten years ago and for the two year period up to late last spring Harvey Wessel had been rabbi. For the past year visiting rabbis have delivered the services and in September of this year Rabbi Louis J. Kopald rabbi emeritus of the Deleware avenue temple of Buffalo, New York, will fill the pulpit.

William S. Katzenstein. Justice of the Fourth District Municipal Court, New York, will take office today to succeed the late Justice McTigue. He was appointed by Mayor Waken.
