A demand that the League of Nations directly finance the settling of Jewish and other refugees from Germany and the Saar was sounded today at a meeting of the committee which the League of Nations has established to cooperate with James G. McDonald, the High Commissioner, in his work.
At today’s session the committee approved of Mr. McDonald’s plans to investigate the possibilities of the settling of refugees in South American countries. Mr. McDonald will reach South America early next month for the purpose of studying the immigration question there.
Addressing today’s meeting, Mr. McDonald, as well as representative of the French government, emphasized that efforts to settle the refugees in various countries must be concentrated under the direct supervision of the League of Nations. This attitude was also supported by Lord Robert Cecil. “It is clear that the responsibility for the care and the settlement of the refugees must rest on the League,” Mr. McDonald said in his address. “It is only through the League that the work can be effectively done. Hasn’t the time come for the reaffirmation in the most unequivocal manner that the League is inescapably responsible in this whole matter of refugees?” Mr. McDonald asked.
