Israel Premier Moshe Sharett hailed today the “bond of Biblical heritage, democratic solidarity and quest for social justice” between the Israel and British people. Mr. Sharett spoke at a ceremony marking the planting of the 250,000-tree Queen Elizabeth Coronation Forest on a Jewish National fund site next to the King George V Forest. Funds for the planting of both forests were raised by British Commonwealth Jews.
Addressing some 1,000 persons at the ceremony, including British Ambassador J.W. Nichols, JNF World head Abraham Granott, Lord Nathan of Churt, the Marchioness of Reading and British diplomatic officials stationed in Israel, the Premier declared: “I do not think British Commonwealth Jews could have found a more fitting symbol to express harmony in their abiding loyalty to the British crown and their deep spiritual attachment to Israel than by planting this forest and dedicating it to the name of Britain’s gracious Queen.”
