The Jewish Agency’s Department of Missing Persons reported today a 40 percent increase in the number of requests to find missing relatives during the past year. In 1972 5000 requests were filed with the department compared to 3450 in 1971 and 3000 in 1970.
The rise in the number of requests is attributed to the large number of Soviet Jews who immigrated to Israel last year. The majority of the requests come from people who have lost relatives in the holocaust, the department said. Of the 5000 requests in 1972, 1754 were not met. In the last three years some 4000 relatives have been located.
