Rabbi Avi Weiss lambasted members of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council for trying to negotiate an agreement with the Polish government regarding Christian sites near the location of the Auschwitz death camp. The Orthodox rabbi, who was outspoken on the issue of a convent near Auschwitz, charged that the council has no right to sign international agreements and said he would work with Congress to ensure that no federal money would go to the Holocaust museum outside of its remembrance and educational programs. But three speakers at an open meeting of the council rebutted Weiss’ charges that the council’s chairman, Miles Lerman, was prepared to sign an agreement that accepts the Christians sites.
