A call for official American condemnation of Hitlerism was sounded by Rabbi William Margolis of Congregation Ohab Zedek at the Passover festival of the Jewish Fellowship held last night at the Y. M. H. A., Ninety-second street and Lexington avenue.
“Our Government must set this edifying tone–not merely for the benefit of the persecuted German Jews–but as a lesson in American history and idealism to be read and studied by American children,” Rabbi Margolis maintained.
“Let the America of today and tomorrow know be the eloquent spirit of their own day that the widely sung land of the free’ is not a hollow platitude but an immutable truth. Thus will America surely remain a ‘home of the brave’ whose courage is the fighting courage of conviction based on inviolable American idealism.”
Rabbi Margolis also held that “our leaders” should begin to see “that we are developing a religion-less, godless generation, which takes the liberty’ of defying justice and morality. It may some day take the liberty’ of crushing ‘religious liberty!’ “
Dr. I. L. Bril, leader of the fellowship, and Rabbi Joseph H. Lookstein, also spoke.
