Dr. Louis I. Rabinowitz. Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregation of Johannesburg, will retire from his post and leave South Africa next year, it was announced here today at the annual meeting of the UHC.
Rabbi Rabinowitz who was named to his current post in 1945, was born in Edinburgh. He held several rabbinical posts in England and was a British Army chaplain before coming to South Africa. The incoming executive of the United Hebrew Congregation has been charged with finding a successor to Rabbi Rabinowitz.
Rabbi Rabinowitz was critical of the South African Government’s racial policy and was sharply criticized recently for asking South African Jews to pray for the well being of the “political prisoners.” as well as for the Security of the state.
