Rabbi Eli Munk, founder and long-time leader of the German Orthodox community in northwest London, died here Tuesday at the age of 78. He had lived here for nine years following his retirement from what was universally known as “Munk’s shul,” the Orthodox community based on former German refugees which he founded in London’s Golders Green district just before World War II. Munk was known for his original commentaries on the Bible–in the tradition of Samson Raphael Hirsch, the 19th Century leader of German Orthodoxy.
