Rabbi Emanuel Rackman, spiritual leader of Fifth Avenue Synagogue and assistant to the president of Yeshiva University, has been designated by the Department of Defense to conduct a religious retreat for all Jewish chaplains in Europe to be held in Berchtesgaden, Germany, from January 3 to January 7, 1968.
Rabbi Rackman is a member of the Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy of the National Jewish Welfare Board, which recruits, endorses and serves Jewish military chaplains. The commission is composed of representatives of the major rabbinical bodies in the United States: the Central Conference of American Rabbis, Rabbinical Council of America and Rabbinical Assembly.
A recipient of the Army Commendation Ribbon with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Rabbi Rackman is a colonel in the Air Force Reserve and a member of the Association of Jewish Chaplains of the U.S. Armed Forces. He served as a Jewish chaplain in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1946. In the latter year, he was a military aide to the European Theatre Commander’s Special Adviser on Jewish Affairs. Sponsored annually by the Department of Defense for chaplains of the three major faiths, religious retreats provide chaplains with opportunities for study and meditation, and also enable them to keep abreast of current spiritual trends.
