Rabbi Emil Bernhard Cohn, 55 years old, an outstanding Zionist leader, scholar and writer, was arrested today by the Gestapo (State secret police). No reason was given for the detention, but it was presumed to be statements made by Rabbi Cohn in a New Year sermon last week.
Dr. Cohn was previously arrested by the Gestapo on Dec. 20, 1935, and held for eighteen days on a charge of criticizing the Nuremberg “ghetto laws” in an address at Kopenick.
Today’s detention led Jewish circles to fear that similar arrests of Jews for utterances unfavorable to the Nazi regime may have occurred in the provinces.
Dr. Cohn is the author of a play, “Letter of Uria,” and has translated the works of Yehuda Halevi, Hebrew author, into German.
