Rabbi Goren, addressing a convention of National Religious Party leaders in Tel Aviv on religious problems, insisted that there must be no deviation from halacha in performing conversions. Last week Rabbi Goren conceded to a B’nai B’rith religious group that halacha was sadly behind the times and urged tolerance and good will on both sides to solve Israel’s religious problems. Rabbi Goren has sought, so far without success, to resolve the “mamzer” case. Rabbinical authorities have refused to review it. But it has aroused public opinion in Israel.
