South Africa’s President, J.J. Pouche, received Israel’s Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren yesterday at his residence in Pretoria. Rabbi Goren was accompanied by Chief Rabbi B.M. Casper of Johannesburg. The President gave them a cordial reception and evinced keen interest in religious affairs in Israel. Maj. Gen. J.A. Van Zyl. Chaplain-General of South Africa’s defense forces, was also host to Rabbi Goren at a luncheon in Pretoria.
The luncheon was attended by Defense Minister P.W. Botha, head of South Africa’s armed forces, and Israeli Charge d’Affaires Ambassador Michael Michael and Jewish communal leaders. The luncheon was held at the home of Rabbi S. Katz, Rav of Pretoria Jewry who also acts as liaison officer between the Jewish community and military authorities. Botha and army chiefs gave Rabbi Goren a warm welcome and questioned him about Israel’s military setup.
