Rabbi Israel S. Dresner, president of the New Jersey region of the American Jewish Congress, entered his tenth day of fasting today to protest the Soviet government’s head tax on Russian Jews applying for exit visas and the American military participation in Vietnam. Rabbi Dresner, spiritual leader of Temple Beth Tikvah. began his fast Sept. 17 on the eve of Yom Kippur. He announced to his congregation that he would continue his fast until “at least” the end of the Jewish holiday season at sundown Sunday.
Rabbi Dresner called it “downright obscene for American grain dealers, exporters, international grain operators and inside dopesters to be reaping windfall profits of more than $100 million at a time when the Soviet government has placed thousands of educated Jews on the slave block for exorbitant ransom fees.” Also fasting for “the good name and good conscience of my country, the United States of America,” he condemned the slaughter of Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laotians by what he called the “heaviest aerial bombing and naval shelling In human history.”
The Bronfman family. In accordance with the will of the late Samuel Bronfman who died in Montreal last year, has decided to set up a foundation to be known as the Samuel and Saidye Bronfman’s Family Foundation. It will be located in Montreal, The Foundation, although not yet chartered, will Include Jewish charities and donations to the State of Israel. Dr. Peter Swann, former director of the Royal Ontario Museum of Arts, was appointed director general of the Foundation.
