The only solution of the problem of the Jewish youth in Germany and of all adult Jews, who are still “mobile” is to leave their country, declared Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, one of the co-chairmen of the United Jewish Appeal, which is seeking $3,250,000 for the aid of Jews of Germany and other lands, in an address delivered last night to a group of Jewish young men and women and representatives of Jewish youth organizations in the five boroughs.
The meeting was held at the home of Miss Pauline Baerwald, national chairman of the junior division of the United Jewish Appeal. Edward M. M. Warburg, the son of Felix M. Warburg, Carlos Israels, and Miss Baerwald also spoke at the conference. Leonard M. Wallstein Jr., chairman of the junior division of the Greater New York City drive, presided.
Rabbi Wise, who has just returned from a visit to Germany, said, during the course of his address, that the situation of the Jews in Germany had reached the lowest ebb. “The utter hopelessness of the position of every man, woman and child of Jewish blood within the Reich became so apparent to me that it blotted out all the details, and makes it impossible to draw a picture other than one of blackest despair,” he stated.
