The request of local Jewish agencies for kosher meat for the needy of that race instead of pork was strengthened by an admonition addressed by Rabbi Joseph Konvitz, newly-elected president of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada, to government officials, cautioning them “not to violate the feelings of the needy Jews by offering them salt pork.”
Earlier in the week, the local relief office had forwarded to its cooperative agency, the Jewish Social Service Bureau, a batch of orders for salt pork, which were to be made available to needy Jewish families. The Bureau promptly returned them and the state relief administration was urged to provide kosher meat instead.
