The Warsaw rabbinate was informed today that the Chief Rabbi of Leningrad, Rabbi Simon Lazarew, died in a Soviet prison. On February 26, 1930, Rabbi Lazarew and Rabbi Yasnogorowski, were arrested by the secret Russian police and accused of maintaining relations with rabbinical organizations abroad. On April 3, Rabbi Lazarew was found guilty and sentenced to ten years exile in a concentration camp. Later there were reports that the Soviet government would free Rabbi Lazarew and permit him to live outside of Leningrad.
