Rabbi Lissman, Senior Chaplain of N.Y. Fire Dept., Dead; Funeral Today

Funeral services will be held here tomorrow for Rabbi Edward Lissman, senior chaplain of the New York City Fire Department and founder and former spiritual leader of the Riverside Synagogue, who died here yesterday at the age of 92. He was also chaplain-in-chief of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States since the First World War, and was chaplain of the Jewish Postal Welfare Workers.

Born in Sheffield, England, Rabbi Lissman came to the United States in 1889 and served in his first rabbinical position at Temple B’nai Sholem in Brooklyn. In 1904 he founded the Hebrew Tabernacle in Harlem, and served as its spiritual leader until 1922, when he founded the Riverside Synagogue. He was a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. He has been a chaplain in the Fire Department since 1930.
