RABBI LOUIS I. NEWMAN, Temple Rodeph Sholom, 7 West Eighty-third street: “The experiences of the Jewish people throughout the ages makes clear that liberty can be won by passive as well as by active resistance. The victory of Moses over Pharoah was gained by moral and religious suasion; other triumphs have been won by the oppressed over their oppressors. The Jewish people today has no army or navy, but it is winning the struggle against Hitlerism by the sheet rightness of its cause. Whatever obstacles may be thrown in their path, Jewish leaders must not hesitate to mobilize public opinion through the protest mass meetings, and through the public press. Hitler will continue his tyranny if no one objects, but not even a dictator, enthroned by the seeming acquiescence of millions, can long endure the hostility of other nations.
“The United States Government at Washington, now in the midst of negotiations with German representatives, must not in any way weaken the opposition of American citizens to Hitler’s persecution of Jews and other minority groups. If a trade agreement is negotiated at the behest of those who own German securities, it will be a blemish on the American escutcheon. Apparently there is now in process a series of conferences involving the issue of the rights of German citizens of Jewish faith; Ambassador Dodd, both here and abroad, must make it clear to Hitler that there will be no cessation of world protest and of American indignation until the anti-Semitism of the Nazi government completely ends.”
