Settler leader Rabbi Moshe Levinger of Hebron was released on bail Thursday, after having been arrested the night before the refusing to show up at two court hearings.
The rabbi, who initiated the settler presence in Hebron with a group of followers in 1968, is the spiritual leader of the town’s settlers.
Jewish settlers rioted when police came to arrest Levinger Wednesday night near the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron. One settler, who tried to prevent the arrest by jumping on a moving patrol car, was lightly hurt. He was treated at Hadassah Hospital in Kerem.
Police and Knesset members sharply criticized Hebron settlers for shouting racial slurs at a Druse police officer during the incident.
