“American anti-Semitism is increasing day by day through chainletters, financial news-agencies, Fascist agencies, and now through Father Coughlin of Detroit, whose recent blast against Secretary of the Treasury Morgenthau is one of the most vicious things that has appeared since the articles of the Dearborn Independent,” declared Rabbi Louis I. Newman at the Port Chester Jewish Center tonight in a meeting held under the auspices of the Jewish Community Center and Sisterhood.

“Every mail brings to the rabbis of the country infamous screeds by anti-Semites who are seeking to incite Gentiles secretly and publicly against the Jews of this country. Literature is being disseminated in the subways and other public conveyances; is being left at door-steps of private homes, and otherwise purveyed,” he asserted.

“Perhaps behind the scenes are Nazi propagandists who are playing upon American Gentiles to do their work for them, under the cover of ‘Americanism.’ But whatever the cause, it is certain that anti-Semitism is becoming a veritable flood which may engulf American Jewry, or reduce Jewish activity to a minimum in public affairs.

“Father Coughlin’s statement on Sunday was particularly ominous.”
