Clemency for the 18 Jewish youths sentenced to death by a military court last week on charges of making a terrorist attack against the Haifa railway yards in June, was urged by Tel Aviv’s chief rabbi-elect, J.L. Unterman, today when he was received by Sir George Gater of the Colonial Office.
Gater, who spent 25 minutes with Unterman, promised to forward the appeal immediately to Colonial Secretary Hall who is on vacation. Rabbi Unterman said after the interview he hoped that “reason would prevail.”
