RABBI SAMUEL H. GOLDENSON, Temple Emanu-El, Fifth avenue and Sixty-fifth street; “There has never been a people on the face of the earth that has never suffered slavery at some time, that has not tasted of the bitter cup of bondage. To Israel, this has been a challenge. We should remember that our forefathers were slaves; we should conceive of ourselves as slaves. We must care for the poor, the needy, the orphans, the widows, for those who have become handicapped–you may think of yourself as their master unless you remember that your own forebears were slaves.
“Imagine the sufferings of our brethren in the latest Egypt–Germany. See how the fact that they have been loyal to Germany increases their suffering; see how the fact that their ancestors may have been in Germany longer than those of their oppressors also increases their suffering. Because they remained strangers, they are enslaved.
“Wherever men and women are found suffering, we, the children of Israel, should remind ourselves of the heart of the Savior and go out to help them. May we sanctify ourselves in service and usefulness in a world in which there are many who suffer and are enslaved.”
