Rabbi Sabato Alfredo Toaff, Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Leghorn and president of the Council of Italian Rabbis, died here yesterday at the age of 83. As a sign of mourning, the Jewish community here, one of the oldest in Europe, has closed its offices and all Jewish schools.
A native of Leghorn, Rabbi Toaff was actively interested in Jewish history. One of his surviving sons is Rabbi Elio Toaff, Chief Rabbi of Rome.
