The conservative, Reform and Orthodox rabbinates joined to in proclaiming nation-wide services of mourning in behalf of the persecuted on May 27 and 28. The proclamation was signed by Rabbi Simon Greenberg, president of the Rabbinical Assembly; Rabbi Max C. Currick, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein president of the Rabbinical Council of America.
“Many thousands of our brethren of the House of Israel and many of other faiths are now stricken by the rod of persecution,” the proclamation said. “Many have been slain. Many anxiously seek a haven of refuge. All lovers of humanity are bowed in sorrow.
“It is fitting that we who are profoundly moved by the evil which has overtaken our brethren of the faith and others should gather in solemn assembly to speak our grief, to lift our hearts to God, as we stretch out our hand in compassion, encouragement and comfort to the pitiful victims of human cruelty.
“Therefore, we, the presidents of the conference of rabbis of the conservative, Orthodox and reform synagogues of the United States and Canada, do hereby call the members and friends of our respective synagogues for a solemn service of mourning and intercession on the sabbath of May 27-28. We pray for the peace of Israel and of mankind.”
