Dr. Robert Gordis, president of the Rabbinical assembly of America, today announced the issuance of a statement by the Executive Council of Assembly, opposing the introduction of sectarian instruction and observance of religious festivals into the public school system on the grounds that religious education is not a responsibility which the state or any state agency can assume or discherge with success.
The statement said that the public schools cannot do justice to all religious deologies and still achieve the main general goals of education; that such formal instruction would tend to identify the school system with particular denominationalisms; and that such a program might bring into the education system all the evils involved in union of church and state.
