An appeal to all legislative bodies and governors in every state of the union to exempt Sabbath-observing Jews from the Sunday closing law, was voiced here today at the national convention of the Rabbinical Council of America, an Orthodox group, by Rabbi Fabian Schoenfeld, chairman of the convention.
“The Sunday laws constitute an infringement on the basic structure of American freedom, ” Rabbi Schoenfeld said. “By compelling small retail merchants to cease operating during two full days of the week, the Sunday law is conducive to a most disastrous impact on the economic fortunes of sincere followers of their faith. It is a solemn obligation of our elected leaders in city government to banish forever the discriminating, archaic and unreasonable restrictions which the current statute imposes on our Jewish citizens who are practicing the fundamental tenets of their religion. ” Rabbi Abraham AvRutick, of Hartford, Conn., was reelected president of the Rabbinical Council.
