An appeal to President Roosevelt to facilitate shipping food to Jews in the ghettos of Eastern Europe through the International Red Cross, was voiced today in a resolution adopted at the 36th annual convention of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada meeting at the Hotel Ostend here. Several of the rabbis pointed out that the Jews in the ghettos actually have the status of civilian prisoners, and as such have the right to receive food from outside.
The convention also decided to launch a campaign to raise a half-million dollars for the Emergency Committee to Aid Refugee Yeshiva Scholars and Rabbis. More than $50,000 in cash pledges were donated by the delegates themselves today.
