Judge Platzek of the Supreme Court of New York decided that the rabbinical divorce obtained by Louis N. Hammerling in Galicia was valid in America because the decree was affirmed by the Imperial Royal Law Court of Austria. Hammerling who is now a Polish Senator and was formerly the head of the Foreign Press Association in the United States was sued by his first wife, Clara Hammerling for the annulment of their divorce on the ground that a rabbinical divorce is not legal in the United States. When Hammerling, who is now married again, first obtained his divorce he conferred a settlement of 250,000 krones upon his first wife, but with the collapse of the krone, making the 250,000 worth only $5., he made a new financial settlement.
