Dr. Harry D. Gideonse, president of Brooklyn College and head of Freedom House, and Dr. S. Ralph Harlow, Professor of Religion and Biblical Literature at Smith College, were tonight awarded honorary degrees of Doctor of Humane Letters at the New York commencement exercises of the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion. Another graduation ceremony was held at the Cincinnati school of the College-Institute Saturday.
A. W. Binder, Professor of Jewish Music at the Jewish Institute of Religion for over 30 years and a pioneer in Jewish music, received an honorary Doctorate in Hebrew Letters. In addition, two alumni of the school received earned degrees of Doctor of Hebrew Letters and eight graduates of this year’s class were ordained rabbis.
