A number of French rabbis have established a special committee to ask for a stricter application of conversion laws and for a change in the Israeli Law of Return which they claim is “too lax and liberal.” The committee, Ygud Lemaan Kium Hayahadut (Organization for the Existence of Judaism), calls for the strict application of halachic law which prescribes that a Jew is one born of a Jewish mother. The committee organizers say that a number of lay people including students have joined the organization and expressed their support of the group’s objective.
