Rabbis stranded in Japan as refugees today cabled a unique query to the Chief Rabbi of Palestine asking him when Yom Kippur actually starts. The cable explained that because of the difference in time between Japan and Palestine the stranded rabbis do not know when to start their Yom Kippur fast.
Chief Rabbi Herzog, upon receiving the cable, convoked a meeting of rabbis in Jerusalem to solve the problem. He pointed out that this is the first time that such a problem has arisen.
