A message urging him to “avoid the tragedy of a conflict” in India and to seek a friendly settlement with Gandhi and other leaders, was sent Prime Minister McDonald by 102 American clergymen.
Among those signing the petition were Rabbi Samuel J. Abrams, Brookline, Mass.; Rabbi William Fineshriber, Philadelphia; Rabbi Mitchell Salem Fisher, New York; Rabbi Israel Goldstein, New York; Rabbi Sidney E. Goldstein, New York; Dr. Jacob Kohn, New York; Rabbi Alexander Lyons, Brooklyn; Rabbi Abram Simon, Washington; Dr. Stephen S. Wise, New York, and Rabbi Louis Wolsey, Philadelphia.
The message was circulated, it is believed, by Dr. John Haynes Holmes, pastor of the Community Church. It asks the prime minister “to avoid the tragedy of a conflict which would mean catastrophe for Britain, India and mankind.”
